Stephan Lehr

Né en 1970 à Paris, Stéphane Lehr a découvert le voyage à 18 ans : Il part en Israël et en Egypte pendant un an.

De retour en France, il commence un cursus de cours du soir sur l’image, tout d’abord mouvante puis fixe. Après quelques années passées à travailler dans le milieu de l’audio visuel, il finit par se consacrer entièrement à la photographie dont il apprécie la complexité des contraintes, mais aussi la liberté et l’autonomie.

En 1992-93, il entre à l’agence CIRIC, spécialisée dans les reportages religieux et sociaux, et entame un travail de fond, qui durera huit ans, sur les multiples formes, courants et tendances du judaïsme, en France et à l’étranger.
Ce panorama n’est pas exhaustif et Stéphane Lehr s’intéresse également au christianisme et à l’Islam, ainsi qu’à des sujets plus sociaux, comme les Sans Domiciles Fixes, les Roms et les Tziganes, la prostitution…
Pendant ces années, il travaillera beaucoup avec les groupes Bayard Presse Editions et Malesherbes Editions.

En Septembre 2000, il repart en Israël pour photographier des camps de réfugiés et se trouve en première ligne pour couvrir la seconde Intifada qui commence sous ses yeux.
C’est une autre carrière qui commence alors pour lui, qui avait toujours eu l’ambition de se consacrer à des sujets d’actualité. Il restera trois mois à Gaza pour couvrir le conflit et par la suite, mènera un travail de fond sur les camps de réfugiés en Jordanie, au Liban (Sabra et Chatila), en Cisjordanie et dans la Bande de Gaza.

Ces reportages vont le conduire à intégrer l’équipe des journalistes de Médecins du Monde avec laquelle il continue à travailler, tout en poursuivant ses activités. Il collabore également, depuis fin 2003, avec le service de communication de l’Armée du Salut.
Fin 2004, il intègre Deadline, agence d’actualité française, représentée par Polaris aux Etats-Unis.

En Jordanie, au Pakistan, en Afghanistan, en Côte d’Ivoire, en Angola, au Sri Lanka, mais aussi en France, il multiplie les voyages et les sujets de reportages : la malnutrition, le SIDA, les enfants des rues, les réfugiés, les interventions militaires françaises en Afrique, le Tsunami...

De plus, il partage souvent ses expériences, son goût pour son travail, lors d’interventions au sein de classes des lycées Eugénie Cotton de Montreuil-sous-Bois, et Auguste Blanqui de St Ouen, ou par le biais de correspondances électroniques entretenues avec les élèves au cours de ses voyages.


Stéphane Lehr aime à explorer, à s’immerger dans chaque problématique pour en découvrir tous les acteurs, toutes les nuances, pour en explorer tous les aspects. Plus que la couche apparente et superficielle des évènements, plus que la simple actualité sitôt regardée et si vite oubliée, ce sont les aspérités des cicatrices les plus profondes, des traumas cachés de l’humanité qui se révèlent sur la surface à priori lisse de ses photos.

Born in 1970 in Paris, Stephan Lehr discovered the travelling at 18 years and spent a year in Israel and Egypt. Returning to France, he began a course of study of the photoimage, first of all moving then fixed. After a few years spent to work in the visual medium of the audio, he became devoted entirely to the photography in appreciation the complexity of its constraints, but also of it freedom and autonomy.

In 1992-93, Stephane joined agency CIRIC, specializing in the religious and social reports, and starts a principal work, which will last eight years, on the multiple forms, currents and tendencies of the Judaism, in France and abroad. This panorama is not exhaustive and Stephan Lehr is also interested in Christianity and Islam, like more social subjects, like Without Fixed Domiciles, Roms and the Gypsies, the prostitution. During these years, Lehr did a lot of work with Bayard Presse Editions and Malesherbes Editions.

In September 2000, Stephane set out again to Israel to photograph refugee camps and on the front lines covering the second Intifada which starts before his eyes. It is the beginning of another chapter in his career . He stayed in Gaza covering the conflict and following that started a major work on the refugee camps in Jordan, in Lebanon (Sabred and Chatila), in the West Bank and in the Gaza Strip.

These reports led him to join the team of the journalists for Doctors of the World with whom he continues to work. Since the end of 2003 he has also been collaborating with the Salvation Army.

At the end of 2004, Stephane joined the Deadline agency in France and is represented by Polaris in the United States. He has since travelled throughout Jordan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Ivory Coast, Angola, Sri Lanka, but also in France, covering subjects on: malnutrition, the AIDS, children of the streets, refugees, French military interventions in Africa, the Tsunami.

Furthermore, he shares his experiences and love for his work by be being a guest lecturer in classes of the colleges Eugénie Cotton de Montreuil-sous-Bois, and Auguste Blanqui de St Ouen, or or via email with the students while he is travelling. Stephan Lehr likes to explore and immerse himself in every project to discover the players, the nuances and every aspect. More than the superficial layer of events and more than the simple facts that are looked at and fogotten so quickly its the roughness of the deepest scars , the hidden traumas of humanity that reveal themselves on the smooth surface of his photography.
