Timor L'este-An Intimate Portrait
Description: July 2004, Cutete, Oecussi, Timor L?este.

Men work in the fields with iron bars and their hands. The devastation of the village of Cutete in the aftermath of the bloody conflict of 1999 was complete. Most of the four hundred people from the local area hid in caves in the hills behind the village watching helpless as pro Indonesian militia, fuelled by drugs, burnt and machetied their way through the area. These men hid for six weeks with no food and little water until the Australian led Interfet forces arrived in helicopters. Driven by an almost fanatical zeal to make life better for their families these men toil long hours to prepare extremely poor soil for the planting of crops.
