Description: |
Jangada, Brazilian wooden raft. Perhaps the first boat built by men, jangada was originally made of three trunks tied together; the arrival of Portuguese people and consequent slavery of the Indians demanded improvements on its building, and it grew up in size - five or six trunks - and gained a sail and rudder: this way, fishing could be done by more men over deeper waters, as consequence of the change of fishermen lives. 17th century Indians began to explore more than their daily needs, stimulated by Portuguese habits. |
