Northern Exposure
Description: Like the rest of the Philippines, Batanes was occupied by Japanese Imperial Forces during WWII. During this time, Ivatans were made to dig tunnel systems in the hills surrounding the capital town of Basco. These tunnels served as lookout points and gun platforms, allowing the Japanese to observe the waters surrounding the Batanes Islands for miles in every direction.
